(NIV) Look at the opposite of this verse: We do not love God because He did not love us first. Does the ring of this false verse sound familiar? Certainly, many people do not love God because they think God did not do what they wanted done or God did not display His love for them like they wanted His love displayed. Pretty pathetic, isn't it? Any other reason to love God is not reason enough. The fact we love Christ because He first loved us, rises above all other reasons to love Him and this reason to love God pushes us higher and higher up toward God. We did not love Him first. God FIRST loved us. God loved us first in spite of who we are or what we are. We can try to love God to get what we want but loving God to get what we want does not work. |
