A Daily Devotional About the substance of prayer (2) Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (NIV) The Lord knows you. He knows your every thought and every emotion. With all His knowledge about you, you must still pray. Praying so God will be blessed is not so important. You are to pray so the people you pray for will be blessed. Some people might believe since God already knows what you need, why bother to pray in the first place? However, God needs you to be where He is in your heart and in your spirit. God needs your soul to be connected to Him just like a shepherd needs to be near his sheep. This soul connection between you and God is the essence of what prayer is all about. When we pray for others, we usually have our list of people. God knows about these people and their needs. When you pray for others, God loves and treasures your hunger to have them blessed and touched by Him. When you do what God loves and what He treasures, eternal rewards flow to you and to the ones for whom you are praying. When we pray, the connection we establish with God is more important than the words we send to Him. The most important part of a telephone conversation is getting connected. You could talk into your phone for ten thousand years but without a connection none of your words matter. |
