When we see others victimized by disaster or we are involved in a disaster, our ideas and perceptions change. In times of disaster, our ideas and perceptions may change and we may come to realize we are more helpless and more vulnerable than we thought. In times of disaster, we may realize the worst of the sinful among us could murder us or leave us to die. In times of disaster, we may realize the worst of human sinfulness can appear on our doorstep in the form of persons we previously thought were kind and decent people. In addition, in times of disaster, we may realize the people we previously thought we could depend upon are not dependable. In these times, we may realize we made a mistake by putting someone in charge of watching out of us when we find they have fallen asleep at the switch. In these times, we may realize we are on our own and we have no resources to be on our own. In these times, we may realize we have run out of options and there is no one to help us when our options are gone. Even in our most desperate hours, we must live in Christ and walk in the shadow of His cross. In our most desperate hours, we must never make any excuses. In our most desperate hours, we must never search for an out. In the worst of times, Christ is always with us. Although we may never see the results of His work produced as a result of our life, we must still walk in the shadow of His cross. We must walk in the shadow of His cross compelling us to love as He loves, the shadow of His cross compelling us to live as He would have us live, and the shadow of His cross compelling us to serve as He serves.
