About patience and the Lord’s appearing…

James 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. (NIV)

Several billion people have died since these verses were written. Most people who read these verses do not believe the Lord’s coming is near. Yet, for the billions of people who have died in the last 2000 years, the Lord’s coming was rather immediate. The most common interpretation of this verse is the Lord’s coming is foretold as an event in the lifetime of the reader. However, since we only live a short time, the Lord’s coming could easily refer to the time when Christ takes our hand and leads us home to be with Him. Regardless of the interpretation, the verse encourages us to be patient and persevere.
