About praying when you are afraid:

1 John 4:18 But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. (NIV)

We fear what might be in the future. We do not fear yesterday, unless we fear previous punishment or loss will happen again in the future. When we have been punished or suffered loss in the past we fear what has happened in the past will come back and hurt us again. However, when we pray and we are afraid, we must remember to pray for the perfect love of Christ to descend upon us like a dove. His perfect love takes away our fear. His perfect love shields us from the fear we carry as a result of the punishment we have experienced in the past.
