About submitting to God and resisting the devil:
James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NIV)
We are told in this verse to submit to God and to resist Satan at the same time. We are to be compliant to the will of God and resist Satan. Think of our role as melting down and freezing out. Of course, generally speaking, these two ideas are opposite from each another. We need to be submissive to God so God can come in and mold us and shape us. We must be pliable in the hands of God. At the same time we must be tough as steel when we are resisting evil. The devil will indeed run away from you when you both submit to God and resist the devil's power. On the deepest level, submitting to God and resisting Satan are not really opposites, because submitting to God results in our resisting evil. God wants us to be proactive in these matters.
We live in a world of evil and sin. To deal with the evil and sin in our world and in our life we must be willing to be molded and shaped by Christ. Getting rid of Satan should not be the objective. The objective should always be to submit to God because in submitting to God, a fleeing devil is automatic when we submit and resist.
