About the love of money:

1 Timothy 6:9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (NIV)

The love of money makes people do things they would not ordinarily do. Greed turns a respectable person into a person who would do things deserving disrespect. Greed in the form of the love of money destroys a person's soul and drives him or her away from God. Money has power. The paper or metal used to make money has no power on its own. However, the power money represents can corrupt the soul. The power of money can turn us inward and make us ignore the hurts and pain of others. The power of money can keep us from giving or surrendering money to God. The power of money makes us want to keep our life for ourselves rather than helping us humbly give our life to Christ. The power of money can make us selfish and make us ignore the heart and life of others. The power of money can turn us into spiritual ogres. However, Christ has given us a way to deal with the love of money. Christ calls us to love Him rather than love money. Christ calls us to love Him with such abandon we should give away all our wealth and follow Him.
