Topic: A Christmas Vow

When I was a young girl, a pretty neat gift to get was a cardboard refrigerator and oven set. My father spent one Christmas Eve and early Christmas morning hours putting just such a set together for me. So, tired as he was, these words came to his mind as he watched his five children enjoy another Christmas.

'Tis the day after Christmas, the kind words are all spoken.
The toys lie around all twisted and broken.
Santa is now just an ugly old grouch
'Bout ready to crawl on the psychiatrist couch.
Mother, distraught, disheveled and weary,
Is about to dispel the "Santa Claus" theory.
The children are scarred from their many battles over the trains, the dolls and the baby rattles.
But the New Year arrives and we all make a vow that next year come Christmas it'll be different somehow.
We all will shop early (we can if we would) providing, of course, that our credit's still good.
Soon though comes Spring and Summer does follow
And now our resolutions all seem quite hollow.
'Til next thing we know, it's December once more
And it's time again to stampede the store.
But, isn't it worth it to get that "lift"
from watching a loved one open their gift?
It is wonderful, isn't it, when someone shares
and everyone, for one day, can forget their cares.
