Topic: Lessons From STD's And AIDS

Many people today don't want to run the race, or play the game, they want to be excused. In November of 1991 the sports world was shocked by news that Magic Johnson was HIV positive. There are lessons we can learn from life and lessons to be learned about AIDS.

Lesson No. 1: AIDS is real. VD or venereal disease is real. In the late 1990's, it is estimated that 10 to 12 million new cases of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) were being reported to disease control centers in the United States each year. gonorrhea, syphilis, and the less common granuloma inguinale, lymphogranuloma venereum, and chancroid. In the 1960s up to 20 other diseases were recognized as being transmitted by sexual contact, and the term "sexually transmitted disease" came into use. Some of the more common of these are AIDS, genital herpes (see herpes simplex), chlamydia, and human papillomavirus. Other diseases or infestations that can be transmitted sexually include giardiasis, amebiasis, scabies, pubic "crab" lice (see louse), hepatitis (A, B, and C), group B streptococcal infections (see streptococcus), cytomegalovirus infection, and the protozoan infection trichomoniasis. (Columbia Encl. Online) Lives are devastated by AIDS and other STD's. AID's and other STD's are diseases passed on to children---1 in every 5 Americans has now or will have some form of venereal disease---the cost to our economy is devastating.
Lesson no. 2: Society needs to wake up. Society needs to reform. Society needs to repent or change.
Lesson no. 3: Venereal disease or STD's including AIDS is spread by a behavior. If there is no behavior there is no spread of the disease. AIDS is not like cancer that seemingly appears for no substantive reason or cause. The only protection against STD's, AIDS, or venereal disease is abstinence. Abstinence means not engaging in the behavior.
Lesson no. 4: People need to be loved and cared for and not judged. At the rate of the spread of just AIDS, you will have the opportunity to know someone who has AIDS. Your first thoughts and prayers when you know someone who has AIDS should be for him or her and for his or her family. Christians should never respond in a self-righteous, judgmental, pious manner.
Lesson no. 5: Some people are heroes in life. These people are the ones who step up very big when someone needs them. As Christians, we always need to step up big when AIDS appears in someone's family or life.
