Topic: Listening Skills, Part 2 Of 5 LISTEN FOR IDEAS…NOT JUST WORDS. When listening, if you really want to listen, you want to get the whole picture from the other person, not just isolated bits and pieces of the other person's thoughts. Listen for ideas. Listen for the gems of insight and wisdom from the other person's point of view. Listen to find the direction from which the person is coming and where the other person is in his or her life. CONCENTRATE. Focus your mind on what he or she is saying rather than the form or style they are using to express their ideas. Practice shutting out distractions. DON'T INTERRUPT. A pause by the other person who is speaking, even a long pause, doesn't mean the other person has finished saying everything he or she wishes. Resist the temptation to jump in when the other person pauses speaking. Give the other person a chance to think and collect their thoughts.
